Tom Meighan really does love Coldplay.
A number of us were wondering about this conversation that took place at the 2011 Q Awards:
But the most surprising encounter is with Tom Meighan from Kasabian who greets Martin with a cheerful holler: “I love your band!”
“Oh,” says a surprised Martin. “I thought you hated us.”
“Who said that?” says Meighan, aghast. “It’s a lie. I’ve always loved your fucking band. Straight, man.” He gives Martin a manful squeeze. “I love you. We all love you.”
The question was whether Tom was serious or just being nice, especially in light of his infamous “diss” of Coldplay in Q: “Chris Martin is all right if you’re 35 and feeling sad that your mortgage repayments have gone up.”
However, looking for something else entirely, I found this in the Telegraph Magazine 19 March 2005:
So there you have it. Maybe he sees Coldplay as a kind of musical comfort-food? Well, if he didn’t mean to damn Coldplay with faint praise in the second quote, maybe we can believe that Chris Martin was being self-deprecating, and not slamming Kasabian when he said that the only reason Coldplay won the Brit 2012 Award was because they were the only band left. Ouch.
